The Myer's parrot is a Poicephalus parrot. Meyer's parrots display a dull brown head, back and tail, green or blue-green abdomen, blue rump, and bright yellow markings on the the wings.
These beauties can be very sweet when raised properly. They are not an extremely active bird and are a pleasure to have as company. Meyer's are known for their quiet noises and do not screeech and scream like other pet parrots. Their speech ability is limited but they can learn a few words. Most have a life expectancy of 40 years or more.
Meyer's parrots are native to the plateau woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa where they occur in several woodland types including miombo, savanna woodlands, wooded grasslands, and forests bordering watercourses or agricultural land.
Their wild diet includes fruits, seeds, nuts, berries, and cultivated crops. Seeds of the various legumious trees of the African woodlands are especially favoured, providing their staple food in some areas.
Myer's Parrots as a pets can be offered a variety of foods including parrot pellets, parrot seeds, fresh fruits, and fresh vegetables. Check out the complete list of fresh foods. We strongly recommend using only natural parrot pellets that are free from artificial dyes, flavors, & preservatives such as BHT, & TBHQ.
In the wild, The Meyer's parrot nests in tree cavities. The eggs are white and there are usually three or four in a clutch. The female incubates the eggs for about 28 days and the chicks leave the nest about 60 days after hatching.
Always place your parrot in a cage big enough for them to spread out their full wing span. Place the bird cage in an area free of drafts and where the family spends the most time, usually the living or dining room. The cage should be large enough for the bird to extend its entire wingspan.
A Meyer's parrot will need to have plenty of bright and colorful toys to entertain and chew on. Their beaks can become overgrown, providing plenty of hard toys and wood for them to chew on will trim them down. Pet birds love to hear music, their owner's voice, and even the t.v.!
